Turing Scheme Broadens Student Horizons

14/02/2025

This month, Hair, Makeup and Prosthetics for Production students Harriet and Sonia are in Los Angeles as part of the Turing Scheme! They’ll be studying at the Cinema Makeup School (CMS), Hollywood’s top training for professional makeup. They will be on a four-week program where they will learn to correct a life cast of their model, sculpt the face and neck of a creature, make custom teeth, learn the art of mould making and latex foam casting, and how to apply and paint foam latex appliances.

Outside of studying they hope to go to Disneyland California and take in the sights of LA including the Hollywood Walk of Fame! Both students have worked hard to raise money for their funds to go to LA and they will learn from Hollywood makeup legends and leaders in the field of prosthetics and special effects.

One of the big names teaching at CMS is Mike Spatola who is an Emmy award nominee makeup and SFX artist with over 40 years’ experience with credits including terminator 2, predator 2 and iron man 3 to name a few! Also teaching on the course is Brad Look, an Emmy award winning makeup and SFX artist whose credits include the Hunger Games and Star Trek.

Hair, Makeup and Prosthetics for Production lecturer Tara said: “We are very lucky to have made links and built a friendship with cinema makeup school and all of the amazing staff there who have made these trips possible. The skills that our students will learn at CMS are truly exceptional and will support their transition into industry.”
