Lewis, a final year BSc (Hons) Digital and Technology Solutions degree apprentice at MBDA Systems, was shortlisted for Computing & Digital Technologies Student of the Year at University Centre Weston. Lewis’s passion for software engineering has driven him to excel both academically and professionally.
Reflecting on his nomination, Lewis expressed pride in his achievements and gratitude for the recognition from his lecturers and peers. “I’m quite proud of myself and the effort I put in. Not only am I realising that myself but I’m happy that my lecturers/peers feel the same and put me forward for this award. It validates the quality of work I have delivered and the changes I have pushed for in Weston for apprentices,” he shares.
Lewis says his Digital and Technology Solutions course provided a balanced mix of soft and hard skills, helping him become a well-rounded software engineer. He particularly enjoyed the technical web modules, which offered a refreshing break from the embedded programming he did at work.
As a degree apprentice, Lewis spent one day each week at UCW and the rest in the office. This hands-on experience allowed him to identify his area of interest within software engineering, becoming proficient in C-based languages and developing a passion for low-level software. “I found the area of software engineering I want to specialise in. For example, I had not picked up a C-based language and found low-level software scary before starting and now I’m proficient and intend to do it full-time once I finish my apprenticeship,” he notes.
Lewis credits the lecturers at UCW for their unwavering support and encouragement throughout his studies and for helping him navigate academic challenges and grow as a professional. “All of the lecturers at Weston have delivered a high level of feedback when requested and offered help when I needed it. They’ve always been friendly and encouraging,” he says.
During his time at UCW, Lewis has achieved several notable accomplishments, including being shortlisted for Bristol and Bath Apprentice of the Year – Digital in 2022 and winning South Weston Apprentice of the Year – Digital in 2023.
After graduation, Lewis plans to continue his career with MBDA Systems as a full-time embedded software engineer, seeking leadership experience and potentially pursuing a master’s degree. He remains open to exploring different career paths, aiming to balance technical and project management roles.
Reflecting on his time at UCW, Lewis acknowledges the personal and professional growth he has achieved. “During my time at Weston, I’ve been able to develop several transferable skills outside my course such as technical writing and project management. I’ve become a more rounded individual and far more confident than I was at the start of my apprenticeship,” he says.
To those considering studying at UCW, Lewis offers this advice: “Be open to feedback, take risks, and accept mistakes happen but it’s the best time to learn. If you’re finding something difficult talk to someone and they’ll be able to help.”
