Richard was nominated for the Creative Student of the Year award, a recognition of his inspiring journey from lorry driver to aspiring music professional, a journey that has seen him successfully balance his studies with family life.
“I was extremely proud to be nominated and shortlisted and was honoured to be part of such a grand event,” Richard shares, reflecting on his nomination. Married with two children, Richard’s passion for music has always been a constant. He previously ran open mic nights, charity festivals, and participated in local radio shows. His musical duo, Born and Brewed, won the Radio Wigwam Best International Classic Rock and Blues Artist award in 2022.
Richard’s motivation to choose UCW was driven by his desire to gain a deeper insight into the music industry. An accident at work prompted him to reassess his career and follow his long-held aspirations. “I wanted to gain a better understanding of the music industry and build upon my skills,” he explains. The convenience of UCW’s location and its strong reputation made it the perfect choice.
Before joining UCW, Richard’s academic background included GCSEs and a short course with the Open University. However, most of his experience came from practical involvement in music, having played guitar for 30 years.
Richard’s time at UCW has been marked by significant achievements. He mentions playing at Volkfest’s 30th anniversary and the Portishead Music Festival as particular highlights, along with interviewing YouTube influencer Joshua M Kerr.
Richard’s participation in numerous music events, such as playing at the Stables, the Electric Banana, and the Brit Bar, has enriched his university experience, fostering a sense of community among students. Despite the challenges of juggling work, family, and university, Richard credits the pastoral care and the HEART team for their support. “The staff have always been supportive and encouraged me throughout my course,” he acknowledges.
Looking ahead, Richard plans to start his own business in virtual production, with long-term goals of investing in virtual production and augmented reality to create a sustainable business. “I want to create greater accessibility and creativity within the music industry,” he says.
His time at UCW has equipped him with practical skills and confidence, preparing him for his chosen career path. “The university has encouraged me to think outside the box, be creative, and push myself,” he reflects. Richard’s journey demonstrates that with determination and support, it’s possible to transform aspirations into reality.
For those considering studying at UCW, Richard offers this advice: “I would recommend the course as it allows you to develop your skills, push yourself, and be creative. The university has a family feel that offers a supportive network of people whilst gaining friends. It provides you with opportunities tailored to your interests.”
