Students on a variety of courses worked together to put together an exciting project! Coordinating it all was Professional Music Performance and Production student Rich, who organised this as part of his industry engagement project.
Rich’s vision required a band with a substantial following, so he secured “One Night Stand”, a band with approximately 12,000 Facebook followers. The video concept centred around a toxic relationship, utilising a smoky club aesthetic for visuals which needed to be carefully planned.
The first university collaboration was with Hair, Makeup and Prosthetics for Design students Tia and Olivia. They created the perfect look for the music video dancer. Showing off their skills, they designed makeup and hair, also adding an extra layer of visual storytelling by styling the band members, creating a cohesive look.
Rich’s lecturer Lee helped him to connect with Richard Edkins; the HE Programme coordinator for Film and Media Arts Production. Rich spoke positively about working with these students: “The film crew, primarily first-year students, executed their roles with exceptional professionalism. Their dedication was instrumental in capturing the video’s atmosphere and narrative. Everyone involved in the filming side had various roles, working together towards a common vision.”
A crucial element of this music video was the location. Rich chose The Electric Banana, a venue renowned for supporting live music and music students. Darren and Ted, who work at the venue, provided invaluable assistance with lighting and audio equipment throughout the video shoot.
This collaboration with a local venue forms part of the Performance and Production Arts and Music Careers Excellence Hub. University Centre Weston has ten sector-specific Career Excellence Hubs, which evidence our dedication to supporting both employers and learners in achieving their future goals. By creating a seamless connection between industry and education, we enable learners to acquire not only the essential skills and knowledge but also the professional networks necessary to excel in their chosen fields.
The entire project, from initial meetings and storyboarding to final production and risk assessments, was completed within a month. This remarkable achievement was only possible because of the unwavering dedication the entire team showed throughout the project.
Ultimately, this project successfully united multiple UCW departments. Everyone allocated time to complete the project, creating new friendships and providing practical experience for everyone involved. This demonstrated how powerful collaboration can be, with the result being a high-quality music video that far exceeded expectations.
