Our Nutrition course recently had two exciting lab sessions! We spoke to course lecturer Morgan to hear all about how these sessions went.
Students did one session where they simulated the intestine digesting food. They did this by adding chemicals to the simulated intestine, placing it in a water bath to simulate the body temperature, then taking samples at different stages to see which chemicals had been broken down digested. The class then boiled the samples to see if they would change colour, the brighter the colour the more glucose had been broken down and passed through the intestine wall.
The other session was simulating how the chemicals in our stomach break down food. The class did this by taking a sample, and then adding acid, to simulate stomach acid, and seeing how it would be broken down. Everyone could see the sample lose its colour as the acid broke it down. We then cut out different sizes and calculated its absorption area to see how quickly it could be broken down and absorbed.
These lab sessions form part of the Public Services and Sport Careers Excellence Hub. University Centre Weston has eleven sector-specific Career Excellence Hubs, which evidence our dedication to supporting both employers and learners in achieving their future goals. By creating a seamless connection between industry and education, we enable learners to acquire not only the essential skills and knowledge but also the professional networks necessary to excel in their chosen fields.
