16/07/2024

Kiera Elston is in her second year of the Education, Society and Childhood Degree at UCW. She was shortlisted for Counselling, Education & Healthcare Student of the Year, a recognition of her dedication to her studies and her impactful work in education.

Looking back on her decision to study at UCW, Kiera says, “I liked the sound of the smaller classes and I had previously studied at Weston College, so I was recommended to come and have a look and I am so glad that I did!” Her choice of course was driven by the valuable and eye-opening modules offered, which she knew would be beneficial in her role as a trainee teacher.

Kiera’s academic journey at UCW has been marked by significant achievements. She highlights the development of her confidence through various academic activities such as microteaching, market stalls, and presentations. “I have also started achieving firsts this year, which was a goal I didn’t think I would be able to achieve. My work means so much to me, and it’s nice to see that it is paying off,” she proudly notes.

Throughout her degree, Kiera has continued to work at a primary school, applying the theory she learns in her coursework directly to her teaching practice. This hands-on experience has been crucial for her professional development. “My headteacher has noticed my professional development, leading to opportunities to teach classes, work 1:1, be a learning mentor for apprentices, and work across the whole school with various ages,” she explains.

Kiera feels that the support from UCW staff has been instrumental in her success. “They know you better than you know yourself and support you not only academically but also emotionally. They have been there through the many laughs and tougher times,” Kiera shares gratefully.

UCW’s facilities have also played a key role in Kiera’s academic journey. She particularly values the library, which has been essential for her research and assignments, and the introduction to tools like Canva, which she uses extensively for lesson planning.

After graduation, Kiera plans to complete her final year at her primary school and then pursue teacher training to become a full-time teacher. In the long term, she aims to explore roles such as a Deputy Head or Modern Foreign Languages lead. “My time at UCW has prepared me really well for my future. The lecturers take time to get to know you and your goals and want to work with you to reach them,” she says.

Kiera’s time at UCW has been transformative, both personally and professionally. She has developed confidence, leadership skills, and a clear understanding of her career goals. Her advice to prospective students is, “Go to UCW! The smaller classes work so nicely, and I have met some lifelong friends in my class. We respect and support each other, and you build a close relationship with your lecturers. I wouldn’t choose anywhere else.”
