Jenny, a dedicated student from Sweden, was shortlisted for the Student Ambassador Award at University Centre Weston for the second consecutive year.
As a student ambassador, Jenny actively participates in open days, representing the University and assisting with accommodation tours. Her role extends beyond these events, as she connects with potential international students via social media, offering guidance and support about UCW and relocating to the UK. Jenny says, “Some of the students I have been in contact with before are now studying in the Musical Theatre cohorts below me, so hopefully I have been able to help them in some way!”
Born and raised in Sweden, Jenny moved to Weston in 2021 to pursue her passion for Musical Theatre at UCW. Her background in music and dance spans over a decade, having attended music schools since the age of ten. After graduating from a music programme in Sweden’s equivalent of college, she pursued a Musical Theatre course at Löftadalens folkhögskola, where she first learned about UCW. “I remember we had a zoom meeting with UCW and some of the lecturers, and I remember just really falling in love with the course throughout that call,” she recalls.
Jenny chose UCW for its comprehensive musical theatre programme and the opportunity to study in the UK, recognising the potential benefits for her career. “I figured that becoming a part of the Musical Theatre industry in the UK, and internationally, would benefit me more than just being part of it in Sweden,” Jenny explains.
Her time at UCW has been marked by numerous highlights, including the production of “The Lightning Thief – The Percy Jackson Musical” and the New York touring scheme in January. These experiences have significantly contributed to her growth as a performer. “All of these have not only been incredible experiences, but I have also really grown as a performer and expanded my knowledge through these projects,” Jenny notes.
Jenny’s participation in singing events and the New York trip have been instrumental in her development. The trip to New York, where she studied at the Broadway Dance Centre, was particularly transformative. “It really expanded my knowledge and confidence within different genres of dance even further,” she says.
The support from UCW staff has been invaluable to Jenny. Her lecturers have fostered a safe and encouraging environment, allowing her to explore her strengths and improve continuously. “They have made university feel like a safe environment where it is okay to try new things and where everyone is equal,” she appreciates.
Jenny highlights the excellent facilities at UCW, including multiple dance, acting, and singing studios that are crucial for her course. “Having designated rehearsal spaces is vital for our course, as most of our work is practical,” she emphasises. The convenience of these facilities has allowed her to engage in late-night rehearsals, further honing her skills.
Despite a busy schedule, Jenny has participated in several university events, including Freshers’ Week, which she found instrumental in meeting new people. Performances, concerts, and shows have also enriched her university experience, providing numerous opportunities to showcase her talent and progress.
Jenny acknowledges that self-doubt has been a significant challenge, but with the support of her lecturers and friends, she has learned to navigate it. “Our lecturers are really good at highlighting our strengths and helping us find ways to improve and achieve our goals,” she says. This support has helped her accept that the performance industry is a constant learning curve and that her current achievements are valuable and worthy.
Looking ahead, Jenny has secured a performance job and is excited about the opportunity. Her long-term career goals include working internationally in resorts and on cruise lines, combining her love for travel and performance. Ultimately, she aims to make a living doing what she loves most: singing and dancing.
Jenny’s time at UCW has prepared her well for her career. She has improved her skills, expanded her network, and gained confidence in her abilities. “My three years here have helped me understand the variety of performance jobs available and how to apply to those jobs in the most efficient way,” she reflects.
Personally, and professionally, Jenny has grown immensely during her time at UCW. She has become more confident and secure in her abilities, recognising that with determination and support, she can overcome any obstacle. “I have learnt that I am able to accomplish more than I think,” she says, expressing gratitude for the transformative experience.
To those considering studying at UCW, Jenny’s advice is unequivocal: “Go for it! There is no better support system than the one at UCW. If you want to get into Musical Theatre, you will get so many great opportunities and get to work with so many amazing people.”
