Institute of Civil Engineers Guest Lecture Inspires UCW Apprentices

20/11/2024

Yesterday UCW hosted an inspiring guest lecture led by Suzanne from the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE), aimed at empowering Civil Engineering apprentices with vital knowledge and skills for their careers.

The session provided a comprehensive breakdown of key topics, showcasing the value of ICE membership, guidance for excelling in end-point assessments, and insights into career progression within the Civil Engineering profession.

Attendees gained valuable advice on mastering the end point assessment process, with practical tips on report writing, presentation skills, and effectively explaining their decisions and actions during assessments. The lecture emphasised the importance of clear communication and detailed documentation as essential tools for success.

The event helped to highlight the range of qualifications available in Civil Engineering, offering apprentices a clearer understanding of their options and potential career paths. This was complemented by a celebration of the critical role apprentices play in shaping the future of the industry.

A focus of the lecture was the importance of Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Apprentices were encouraged to use CPD action plans and the use of personal development records to track progress. By setting SMART targets, attendees were encouraged to view professional development as an ongoing journey throughout their whole career.

The session concluded with a Q&A, where students had the opportunity to ask questions about their career aspirations, technical challenges, and the benefits of ICE membership.
