Criminology and Public Services learners were recently given a unique insight into careers within the prison service, thanks to a talk delivered by Gemma, a former UCW learner who has successfully transitioned into the field.
Students had the opportunity to hear first-hand about Gemma’s journey from studying at UCW to working as a Prison Custody Officer (PCO) at HMP Ashfield.
During the session, she shared her experiences at UCW, reflecting on her time as a student and the path she took after graduating. Initially considering a career in the police force, she ultimately decided to join the prison service with Circo, where she now works as a PCO.
Her talk provided valuable insights into the recruitment process, highlighting key steps and offering practical advice to students interested in similar career paths.
She also discussed the realities of working in a prison environment, explaining that while the nature of the offences can be difficult to hear about, engaging with prisoners becomes a manageable and essential part of the job.
Gemma provided an overview of a typical day in her role, starting with a morning briefing and the submission of intelligence reports. She explained how prisoners participate in various programmes with PCOs, designed to support rehabilitation and encourage positive behaviour.
This inspiring talk gave students a valuable perspective on the diverse career opportunities within the criminal justice system. By sharing her journey and offering practical advice, Gemma helped current learners understand the pathways available to them and what they can expect from a role in the prison service.
A big thank you to Gemma for coming in and sharing her journey.
