Exploring the Power of Play with Ben Kingston-Hughes

04/12/2024

UCW recently welcomed award-winning speaker and author Ben Kingston-Hughes for an insightful and entertaining guest lecture on the vital role of play in children’s development and well-being. Ben is the Managing Director of Inspired Children, an organisation known for delivering expert training services to nurseries, schools, local authorities, and others.

Ben emphasised how play is not only essential for developing a child’s cognitive abilities, intelligence, and motor skills but can also be a transformative tool for children who have experienced trauma. Ben shared that for a child with a difficult past, play can be the most important step in a healthy recovery, highlighting the significance of having a trusted adult to provide meaningful, playful interactions.

The lecture demonstrated the importance of play firsthand, with attendees participating in a game designed to engage various parts of the brain. This immersive activity showcased how play directly supports brain development, reinforcing Ben’s message.

Ben’s open and honest delivery, combined with his natural humour, kept the audience both engaged and entertained throughout. His insights and ability to make complex topics accessible left a lasting impression everyone who came along.

This lecture helped to provide students and the wider community with an opportunity to learn from leading voices in education and child development. Ben’s visit offered invaluable perspectives on the profound impact of play, inspiring attendees to consider its role in fostering healthy, happy childhoods.
