The BSc (Hons) Environmental Health Practitioner degree apprenticeship has been developed through consultation with the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health and the Institute for Apprenticeships, along with employers from a range of public and environmental health-related fields. The programme is also aligned to the required standards of The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health ‘Professional Standards Framework’, and will enable graduates to progress to one of the CIEH professional registration pathways. A CIEH accredited degree is often required by employers, especially in the public sector, and as the world of Environmental Health is multi-faceted, the possibilities for career development are vast.

Apprentices are taught via lectures and seminars in the classroom, e-learning and real-world, on-the-job training. UCW’s academic support team also deliver a series of sessions on degree-level research and academic writing to all first-year students.

Apprentices are also expected to learn through independent self-study, which involves working on individual and group projects, and undertaking research in preparation for coursework and exams.

• Environmental Health Law – 30 credits

Year 2

• Principles of Public Health – 30 credits
• Environmental Protection – 30 credits
• Food Control – 30 credits

Year 3

• Health, Safety and Risk – 30 credits
• Housing and the Built Environment – 30 credits
• Public Health in Action – 30 credits

Year 4

• Risk Management Systems – 30 credits
• Environmental Health Project – 40 credits
• Professional Practice – 20 credits

The types of coursework assessments include: essays; laboratory experiments and reports; field work surveys and reports; research; presentations; personal reflections; portfolios; inspections and reports; and health promotion campaigns. Exams are usually online or practical assessments, with approximately 80% coursework.

Most students will work in local authorities in various aspects of Environmental Health, e.g. housing, environmental protection, food hygiene, health and safety and health promotion.

Some may progress to work in the private sector with consultancies or auditors.

Places on Degree Apprenticeships are decided upon by the employer.
