Art and Design Students Take Inspiring Trips

28/10/2024

This month, our Art and Design & Graphic Design students have been busy with three different trips to help expand their knowledge outside the classroom and immerse themselves in different art environments.

The term began with a visit to the Royal West of England Academy’s (RWA) annual open exhibition in Bristol. Students saw a familiar piece by UCW alumnus Hajnal Vegh, whose work stood proudly among esteemed contemporary artists. The exhibition helped to inspire students for what they wanted to create this year.

Next, HE Art and Design and HE Graphic Design students took a trip to London for a vibrant exhibition by Michael Craig-Martin at the Royal Academy of Arts. This excursion showed students Michael Craig-Martin’s striking use of colour and form, sparking fresh ideas and innovative approaches for their own projects. This trip was a brilliant opportunity for students to engage with a celebrated artist’s work, building their knowledge of design and visual arts.

Finally, Year 2 Art and Graphics students returned to Bristol as part of their Collaboration module. They explored models of collective practice with visits to the People’s Republic of Stokes Croft and the Cube Microplex Cinema. During this experience, students attended talks on artist-run spaces, collective ownership, and were introduced to the Cube’s Kids Kino Project, which sparked meaningful discussions about the role of art within the community. The day concluded with a visit to Bristol Cathedral to view artist Luke Jerram’s “GAIA” – a breathtaking sculpture of Earth, inspiring students to consider themes of sustainability within their own work.

These academic trips form part of the Art, Film, Game and Graphic Design Careers Excellence Hub.

By being part of a Career Excellence Hub, all of our courses are designed to make you “job ready” when you graduate. We work with a diverse range of local and national employers to ensure our courses are upgraded with career-boosting benefits, and curriculum content is relevant to today’s industry.

At University Centre Weston, we vary a traditional classroom setting with guest speakers, trips to businesses and employer projects. Through this practice, we equip our learners with the real-world experiences and insights that set them apart in the competitive job market. In an interview, when you are able to draw on real-life experiences, this can help you stand out from other candidates.
