Our Hair, Makeup and Prosthetics for Production students recently had an exciting guest lecture with Rob from Smudge Casualty FX. They train paramedics and other medical staff using advanced prosthetics and makeup to simulate injuries. These simulations are as realistic as possible, with different false injuries including wounds, burns, bruising and blood.
To demonstrate to learners, Rob demonstrated a prosthetic wound for learners. This wound had authentic-looking fake blood thanks to a tube inserted in the prosthetic, meaning that it could realistically bleed. Rob also showed how to blend the prosthetic with skin so that it would look as realistic as possible for a training scenario. Showing his extensive knowledge, demonstrated with examples, which glues and materials worked best for each section of the prosthetic.
This guest speaker forms part of the Performance and Production Arts Careers Excellence Hub. University Centre Weston has ten sector-specific Career Excellence Hubs, which evidence our dedication to supporting both employers and learners in achieving their future goals. By creating a seamless connection between industry and education, we enable learners to acquire not only the essential skills and knowledge but also the professional networks necessary to excel in their chosen fields.
