Our Criminology and Public Services students recently took on New York in collaboration with the brilliant management of Hannah and the Business and Travel team at Weston College! We spoke to course lecturer Anna to get all the details about this exciting experience.
“The itinerary was packed, topical, and required a good set of walking shoes; students and staff averaged 30,000 steps a day! This meant that the three helpings at breakfast were absolutely justified. Notable highlights were Ellis Island, once the busiest immigration processing centre in the US, seeing 12 million immigrants pass through its doors. Some of our students were interested in their ancestry, looking up their surnames in the record books. The 9/11 Memorial Museum was incredibly impactful for all the students. The sheer size of the site, the numbers of public service personnel involved, the heroic efforts of the fire departments, and the historic maritime evacuation of 500,000 people from Manhattan. The students also visited the Natural History Museum and managed to see most of the exhibits across four floors! It is 2 million square feet and contains 30 million objects!
“Students ate classic New York Pizza, were able to shop, visited Times Square and were even able to visit Broadway! There was time for contemplation in Central Park and the class even saw several proposals at the top of the Empire State Building whilst admiring the skyscrapers! The trip built resiliency, knowledge, and camaraderie for the HE team, with the HE students being particularly amenable and supportive of the younger learners on the trip. This was a superbly coordinated and memorable adventure that will stay in our students’ memories for a lifetime.”
This exciting trip forms part of the Public Services and Sport Careers Excellence Hub. At University Centre Weston our approach goes beyond the traditional classroom setting.
