Our students in Hair, Makeup and Prosthetics for Production were recently treated to two guest lectures, each designed to build skills in a key area of the course!
Firstly, wig expert Wendy Richards came in to provide a hands on workshop on making wigs for clients. Specialising in working with long-term clients experiencing hair loss, Wendy demonstrated techniques for secure and comfortable wig attachment, including the use of Velcro, glue, and hooks. Students then applied these methods themselves, cutting wigs for optimal fit and sewing loops to enhance stability. Emphasising client comfort and confidence, the session provided practical experience in wig application and personalisation.
In another hands-on session, drag queen Harry Phillips, known by the drag name Jersey the Devil came in to teach about this unique style! After a workshop styling the wigs, the class turned to self-application of drag style makeup with strong flair and expression. Harry came around the makeup stations to give out individual advice and guidance. Some models also attended so that the learners could practice applying makeup to others.
These guest workshops form part of the Performing and Production Arts Careers Excellence Hub.
