22/11/2024

UCW student Charlie, working for the Ministry of Defence (MoD) came into Weston College to deliver a guest lecture about his degree apprenticeship to A Level students. Charlie progressed to UCW from Weston College two years ago and is studying the Digital and Technology Solutions Degree Apprenticeship.

Charlie started his guest lecture by explaining what the course structure of his apprenticeship. His course is 80% work at the MoD’s Filton Abbey Wood HQ, with 20% study which is completed at University Centre Weston’s Winter Gardens campus. This course lasts for four years, achieving a Level 6 degree by the end. The structure of Charlie’s degree apprenticeship scheme begins with a one-week residential activity centre before going onto six different placements, with opportunities to travel to different MoD offices to complete these.

Charlie spoke extensively about the benefits of degree apprenticeships. Firstly, he mentioned how they allow you to get paid while learning, with no tuition fees. On top of this you can learn with world class employers, like not just the MoD but Rolls Royce, Airbus and many others. Degree apprentices also have excellent continued employment prospects for once their apprenticeship has ended.

Finally, Charlie spoke about the application process for the MoD degree apprenticeship. This included creating a CV and cover letter, online tests and the rest of the interview process.
