Film and Media Arts Production student Serena has been working on a project called Estuary which will be exhibited at the Gallery in Weston-super-Mare from November 9th. Part of Photo Weston & Bristol Photography Festival, the project was a community focussed collaboration between many photographers aiming to explore personal connections to the Severn Estuary. Serena shared: “We went on a series of walks, in which we all explored the Severn estuary within Weston Super Mare and Sand Bay, capturing images as we went along.”
The expedition was curated by renowned photographer Jem Southam. Of the hundreds of images submitted by the members of the group, Jem has worked this down to one hundred and fifty images for the exhibition.
Serena is excited about the prospect of seeing her work displayed in an exhibition: “I’ve never worked on a project like this, so it will be cool to see my work up in a space like The Gallery.” The project has given Serena a chance to get to know her local area better and explore it both literally and creatively! “I have been working to use what we have learned so far around visual storytelling.”
The project has been a great way for Serena to collaborate with like-minded photographers: “My favourite thing about this project has been working with the other collaborators, as each person has their own little stories and anecdotes which really helped me learn more about this area and inform some of my own creative direction.”
