Today we’re introducing one of our accomplished UCW Alumni, Tiff! Since graduating from her public services degree, she has worked as a Special Constable for Avon and Somerset Police as well as a Community Partnership Advisor for Avon Fire and Rescue Service. This year she took on a new role as an Operational Policing Lecturer at South Wales University.
In this job, Tiff manages a class of 115 students, educating future police officers and detectives. She helps them to grasp all the required content and rigorously assesses their work. Tiff is also the module lead for Prevention and Protection, an important criminology element to policing.
Tiff takes her responsibilities as a lecturer seriously saying: “I oversee the students’ welfare, academic performance, and overall journey to becoming competent police officers.” Tiff also goes the extra mile, working with colleagues to ensure her classes are as inclusive as possible. She develops accessible learning materials, to ensure students with disabilities are accommodated. Tiff’s role is varied, from day to day she could be delivering lectures or holding one-on-one sessions with students who need extra support or wish to discuss their learning progress.
The support offered by UCW played a key part in preparing Tiff for her current role. “The support I received, particularly for my learning needs as a dyslexic student, was invaluable. My lecturers’ encouragement and confidence in me allowed me to achieve my full potential. This support has been instrumental in my career, enabling me to assert myself in my academic field and secure my current position.” Tiff described her lecturers as supportive and knowledgeable, saying that they helped her to develop the skills and confidence that she uses every day in her current role.
Tiff’s favourite module on the course was Government and International Relations. “Learning about politics, treaties, and the impacts of war opened my eyes to how these issues affect everyone, even at the community level.” Her favourite part of studying at UCW was the “supportive community and the opportunities for personal and academic growth”.
Finally, Tiff said: “The experiences and lessons I learned at UCW have been instrumental in shaping my career, and I am grateful for the strong foundation provided.” Tiff’s impressive progression from university student to police officer to policing lecturer shows the strong progression opportunities and career focus at UCW.
