Hollie, a dedicated quantity surveying apprentice, was shortlisted for the Engineering & Construction Student of the Year award at UCW.
With 18 months of industry experience, Hollie is deeply committed to her apprenticeship. She explains why she chose UCW: “UCW was the most organised and efficient college while I was looking and it was a bonus that it wasn’t too far away.”
Before joining UCW, Hollie completed an NVQ in Business Administration in 2019. Her academic achievements include distinctions in two assignments, showcasing her dedication. Her apprenticeship integrates work experience with study, offering a comprehensive learning experience. “I am working alongside education, which I find to be very beneficial in aiding my learning,” she shares. This hands-on approach has been crucial for her development.
Hollie found UCW’s facilities helpful in completing assignments. “The facilities are very good, with a range of different options for different courses,” she remarks. The support from UCW staff has also been invaluable. “I have a great mentor, teaching me about quantity surveying using his past experience.”
Returning to study wasn’t always easy, but encouragement from her teachers and peers made the process more manageable for Hollie. “Getting back into education was a challenge, but having the support from the teachers and other students has made it easier and enjoyable,” she reflects.
Looking ahead, Hollie plans to pursue a degree apprenticeship after completing her studies at UCW. Speaking about her long-term goals, Hollie shares, “I hope to complete a degree in my career, then progress into a senior role and potentially one day create a specialist consultation company.”
Hollie’s time at UCW has equipped her with a solid understanding of what is required in the role she aspires to. “It has helped me gain a base knowledge of the construction industry and insight into the role of a quantity surveyor,” she explains.
For those considering studying at UCW, Hollie offers this advice: “I think it would be a great idea. The courses are suitable for people working full-time and allow an expansion of knowledge into a chosen subject, fully preparing you for future careers.”
