Sonia, a mature student studying Hair, Makeup, and Prosthetics for Production, has been shortlisted for the Creative Student of the Year award at UCW.
Before joining UCW, Sonia studied hairdressing straight after school, setting a solid foundation for her current studies. Recollecting her decision to start at UCW, Sonia says, “I saw an advert on Facebook and couldn’t stop thinking about it. It is the degree that I always dreamed of.”
Sonia’s practical experiences, including work experience at Avon and Somerset Fire, the Coastguard, and the Hart Ambulance Team, have been instrumental in shaping her professional development. Guided by supportive tutors who encouraged her to push her boundaries, Sonia has honed her craft and expanded her portfolio with diverse and impactful projects. “They have all been amazing for casualty simulation makeup,” she notes of her placements. “The absolute highlight was going to the Cinema Makeup School as part of the Turing Scheme.”
The support from UCW staff has been pivotal to Sonia’s success. “My tutors have been amazing, encouraging me to challenge myself,” she acknowledges. The facilities at UCW have also been essential for her coursework. “The studios are spacious and well-stocked for my requirements. I have been able to create whatever I need, enabling me to add images to my portfolio for future use,” she explains.
Sonia doesn’t live locally but that hasn’t dampened her enthusiasm for her studies as she explains, “The distance I travel to university is quite considerable. I soon forget about it once I get to university though because I enjoy the course”.
Looking ahead, Sonia is about to enter her third year and has clear long-term career goals. “I want to work on film sets,” she states confidently. Her time at UCW has prepared her well for this career path. “I am armed with the skills to carry me forward,” she affirms.
Personally, and professionally, Sonia has grown significantly during her time at UCW. For those considering studying at UCW, her advice is straightforward: “Go for it!”
