UCW is proud to highlight the achievements of one of its distinguished graduates, Shane, who is making a significant impact in the healthcare sector. Meet Shane, a Registered Nursing Associate at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust, whose role is integral to the delivery of high-quality endoscopic procedures.
In his role, Shane assists in providing endoscopic procedures to patients. This involves comprehensive patient care before, during, and after procedures, as well as aiding consultants in the execution of these procedures.
Shane’s day-to-day responsibilities are diverse, reflecting the dynamic nature of healthcare roles. Mornings typically find him in the recovery area, attending to patients post-procedure. Afternoons are often spent assisting consultants with Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), a specialised procedure performed under fluoroscopic guidance.
Shane’s training at UCW, particularly the Applied Anatomy and Physiology module, provided him with a deep understanding of the digestive system and internal organs. This knowledge is crucial for interpreting x-ray images and endoscope visuals during ERCP procedures. The skills gained from UCW have enabled him to contribute effectively to his team, enhancing service and easing staff pressures.
Shane fondly recalls the Applied Anatomy and Physiology module and the Pharmacology and Medicines Management module. Both were instrumental in his education, particularly the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) assessments, which he found especially rewarding.
The Simulation Ward at UCW was particularly beneficial, providing a safe environment to practice skills with medical mannequins. This hands-on experience was invaluable in preparing for real-world clinical assessments and patient care.
Studying at UCW offered Shane the unique opportunity to collaborate with colleagues across various healthcare sectors. This multidisciplinary approach enriched his understanding of team-based patient care, ultimately enhancing his professional practice.
UCW is honoured to celebrate the accomplishments of our graduates, who continue to excel and make meaningful contributions in their fields. Shane’s journey exemplifies the high standard of education and preparation that UCW provides to its students.
