Last week our amazing Hair, Make-up & Prosthetics for Production (HMPP) students got stuck into an exciting live project!
To celebrate the spooky season, Puxton Park invited the public to enjoy a scarefest of trick AND treats at their ‘Phobia’ event that took place from 22nd October to 29th October. Consisting of five haunted attractions, including a Haunted Tractor Ride, Doll House and ‘Dark Wood’, Puxton Park enlisted the help of our students and their outstanding artistry to make-up the actors with truly spooky looks.
The HMPP students, led by third year learners Holly and Beth and supported by Abbie and Sonia, liaised directly with their Puxton Park clients to realise a shared vision of terror!
They were set a brief and placed in charge of ordering makeup and costumes, liaising with Makeup Assistants from Level 2 Hair and Media Make-Up and communicating with Level 3 Performing Arts learners who were acting as ghosts, ghouls and terrifying clowns during the event.
The Hair, Make-up and Prosthetics for Production students involved in coordinating the event achieved incredible feats of professionalism – creating designs for over 40 actors across the 5 haunted attractions!
This exciting live project also feeds straight back into the classroom – contributing to our students’ professional development and experience in managing an event’s team within an industry setting.
It was also a fantastic opportunity for our university-level students to interact and teach the level 2 Hair and Media Makeup learners as they delivered demonstrations to prepare them for the event.
The learners had to ensure they communicated regularly with Puxton Park and updated them on the progress of the makeup. They also had to organise timings for the actors’ arrivals and ensure each makeup room was staffed with enough makeup artists and assistants to ensure the smooth running of the event.

She said “the students were professional, motivated and enthusiastic throughout the entirety of the planning and running of the event…Third year students, Holly and Beth were assets to the team as Event Project Managers. They have shown they have the skills and resilience to progress into industry and we are really proud of what they, and the whole team, have achieved!”
HMPP student, Holly, told us “the Phobia event was a great experience for my career, it was amazing to have such a big input into the makeup and hair designs for such a prestigious event. On the last night my Dad and brother attended, I was able to join them after the makeup was finished and went round the mazes. My highlight was seeing all our hard work come together. I felt amazingly proud of my team and what we created as everything was so scary!”
